Lack of Understanding About Mental Health

Monday, December 26th, 2011

Despite the increased publicity surrounding mental health and mental health problems, still less understanding about mental health in general.Amazingly, many people still do not understand that mental health problems affect most of us in one way or another, whether we ourselves suffer mental illness own or not. If we remember that a quarter of the population suffer from some type of mental health problems at a time, then chances are, even if we personally do not have a mental illness, we will know someone close to us who do not, therefore our responsibility to understand what mental illness and what can be done about it.

Many people with mental health problems will often feel isolated and rejected, and too afraid to share their problems with others purely because of how they may be felt. Lack of understanding this means they are less likely to get the kind of help and support they need and are in danger of slipping further into depression and mental illness. People need to understand that mental illness need not be a barrier to a better quality of life and help available and that most people with mental health problems can regain control over their lives if they get the support they need.

Addiction Rehabilitation

Friday, November 26th, 2010

The ideal drug and alcohol rehabilitation program utilizes proven treatment protocols and techniques. Comprehensive approaches are necessary to guarantee success in treating the abuser. Some of the latest treatment modalities of drug and alcohol rehabilitation involve elements that may not normally be associated with rehabilitation, such as spiritual counseling, acupuncture, meditation and healthy changes to diet. To overcome many rehab failures, a great deal of attention has been focused on finding new ways to attack the addiction from as many different angles as possible. One area of concern is that many addicts are also chronically depressed. Has the addiction caused the depression or the other way around? For these cases a dual diagnosis treatment is advised, with attention being given to a possible mental condition that requires its own treatment protocols.

One problem with substance abuse is that the user is initially resistant to rehabilitation. They are caught in a circle, or a downward spiral. Best friends and loved ones hold the key to open a door to rehabilitation, and that is by intervention. In some cases it is very difficult to successfully intervene. Often the individual will not respond and may even violently oppose intervention.

Florida stands out in terms of recognizing the need to have a legal way to intervene, in the same way that sufferers of mental illnesses can be committed to proper institutional care. In Florida this is the Marchman Act. It provides a legal framework for people close to the addict to force them into a rehab center and begin treatment such as detox and other critical first-stage therapies to get them away from their abused substance and on the road to recovery. Any relative or in fact any three people who can prove that an individual has a substance-abuse addiction can intervene and force the person into treatment. It has even been used with individuals from outside Florida since it is not necessary to be a resident of Florida. All that is necessary is for the person to physically be present in the state. Thus all drug rehabs in Florida have this as an option that may be of great interest to anyone who has a family member in trouble and who is not willing to be rehabilitated.

Clients to mental health clinics are usually not admitted arbitrarily. The process usually consists of an initial interview with a community worker or a mental health professional. If a client is considered in need of residential or out-patient treatment at a mental health clinic, an extensive history of the mental illness will then be recorded. Such assessments will also include interviews with other doctors and family physicians who have noted the onset and progress of the ailment.

The staff at mental health clinics usually consists of psychiatrists, psychologists, mental health nurses, and support personnel who are specially trained. The scope and activities of mental health clinics in America generally falls under the purview of the CMHC (Community Mental Health Centers). This body issues licenses to clinics and centers for the practice of mental health-related treatment, considering that mental health crises do not always announce themselves in advance, a mental health clinic or center usually offers twenty-four-hour emergency services. These include inpatient hospital referral, since many cases are diagnosed in hospitals while the client is under treatment for other health problems. (more…)
